Unit 6    Portfolio - Influential Civilizations

Ideas and practices spread from one civilization to another. This process is called cultural diffusion. For example, medieval Europe adopted the numeral system from Islamic civilization. Europeans began to use the numbers 1, 2, 3 . . . rather than the Roman numerals of I, II, III.

Between 500 and 1500, many civilizations developed around the world. Each civilization experienced growth in their own unique way. Some developed through trade. Others advanced through new inventions. Many of these civilizations had a strong religious foundation.

For this portfolio, you will create a PowerPoint  or Google Slides presentation investigating the development of two civilizations that developed between the years of 500 and 1500. You should choose civilizations that developed somewhere other than Europe (e.g., in Africa, Asia, or the Americas). You will describe factors that affected the growth of each civilization. If the civilizations had contact, you will also consider how the civilizations impacted or influenced each other.

Step 1: Research

  1. Identify 2 civilizations that existed between 500 and 1500 that are not European, they could be African, Asian, North or South American.

  2. Once you have the 2 civilizations, you will describe major innovations, advancements, achievements, or cultural practices of this civilization.  A minimum of three facts about that civilization.

  3. Select visuals to represent each civilizations, at least one image per civilization.

  4. You will need to cite your source where you got the information so make sure to record the site or book you used when conducting your research. WIKIPEDIA does not count.

Step 2 – Analyzing

You are now ready to analyze.  Reflect on the information you learned while researching your 2 civilizations, then answer the following questions.  Your answers will be put on slides in your presentation.

  1. For civilization #1:  How did these advancements or practices affect the development and growth of the civilization?

  2. For civilization #1: In what ways has this ancient civilization impacted your life today?

  3. For civilization #2:  How did these advancements or practices affect the development and growth of the civilization?

  4. For civilization #2: In what ways has this ancient civilization impacted your life today?

Step 3 – Create Presentation.

After you complete your research, create your presentation.  You can create this using either PowerPoint or Google Slides.  Below is a list of the information that each slide must contain.  Please remember to proof read before you submit.

  • Slide #1:  Title slide with your name and brief description of your presentation

  • Slide #2: Civilization #1- Add the name, date, image, and 3 facts

  • Slide #3:  Civilization #2- Add the name, date, image, and 3 facts

  • Slide #4:  On this slide write your answer to question #1 from step 2

  • Slide #5:  On this slide write your answer to question #2 from step 2

  • Slide #6:  On this slide write your answer to question #3 from step 2

  • Slide #7:  On this slide write your answer to question #4 from step 2

  • Slide #8: Citations-- include the sources you used to gather your research.

DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA.  It is not an academic site and will not be accepted.

Step 4- Submit your presentation

Upload your timeline to the drop box located on slide 4 of Unit 6: Lesson 1

Example Slide for slide #2 or #3:

Rubric: review the 6 categories of the rubric and how your portfolio will be scored.

Rubric Score: 1= 6 pts                 3= 18 pts                5= 27 pts. (extra credit)
