Unit 4 - Migration & Immigration in the Early 20th Century

For this portfolio project, you will examine pictures, which are primary documents, that show the immigrant experience. You will analyze these pictures & create a presentation in which you answer the question:
​How did immigration affect immigrants and other Americans around the year 1900?

Step 1: Find 4 Pictures to Examine

1. Select 4 pictures that represent a firsthand perspective of immigrants as they arrived at Ellis Island, in the New York Harbor. 

2. Save a copy of the picture you choose. 

3. Identify a date associated with each picture.

4. 1-2 sentence summary describing how this image represents the immigrant experience.

​Step 2 – Analyze Pictures and Create the Presentation  

You are now ready to create your presentation.  Your presentation should contain 7 slides. You can create this using PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc. Below is a list of the information that each slide must contain.  Please remember to proof read before you submit.

• Slide #1:  Title slide with your name and brief description of your presentation

• Slide #2: Primary Source Image #1 (include picture, date, & summary sentence)

• Slide #3: Primary Source Image #2 (include picture, date, & summary sentence)

• Slide #4: Primary Source Image #3 (include picture, date, & summary sentence)

• Slide #5: Primary Source Image #4 (include picture, date, & summary sentence)

• Slide #6:  Answer 1 of the following 4 questions: 

  • What challenges did immigrants face upon arrival in America?

  • What you think these immigrants imagined for their future?

  • What steps do you think these immigrants would need to take in order to adjust to life in America?

  • How would immigrants learn to live in a nation with a culture different from their own?​

• Slide #7:  Answer another one of these 4 questions: (Do Not answer the same question please)

  • What challenges did immigrants face upon arrival in America?

  • What you think these immigrants imagined for their future?

  • What steps do you think these immigrants would need to take in order to adjust to life in America?

  • How would immigrants learn to live in a nation with a culture different from their own?​

 

Step 3- Submit
